About this image: This painting came about after traveling through the small “chicken town” of Green Forest, Arkansas where Tyson Foods operates one of its numerous plants. Much of the workforce at these plants is made up of migrant laborers who are subjected to long hours in physically demanding conditions. I began this at a time when ICE conducted immigration raids on similar food processing plants throughout the country. I took inspiration from old black and white photos of immigrants taken at the turn of the century. It seems we look back on that time with national pride, at immigrants who came to this country to begin a new life through hard work and under brutal working conditions. Yet some of the immigration rhetoric today mirrors the old racist sentiments of 100 years ago, with little thought to our nation’s past and founding.
